This video is from back in 2014, but Gary and Keir Dullea (Dave Bowman) talk to IGN about the reasons 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY is the most important SciFi film of all time. I’d have to say I agree with eveything they say. It still galls me how everyone keeps saying the most important film was George Lucas’ 1977 Star Wars. It wasn’t. Star Wars always has been more of an adventure film, while it has science fiction elements to it, it is still largely based on the Saturday morning serials that touches tangentially on the Joseph Campbell mythos of A Hero With A Thousand Faces. But if we judge which film had the most impact on the science fiction genre on a whole, 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY is by far THE most important film bar none.

Meeting and talking with Gary at the Star Trek Continuing Voyage Convention in SF on 15 Oct fulfilled a lifelong dream I had since first experiencing 2001 in 1968. Gary was very gracious and funny and talked with my wife and I for about ten minutes about his appearances in Star Trek and 2001. He autographed a photo of himself and Keir in the pod which I will frame. It was great suprise to see him.

I had the honor of talking with Gary Lockwood for about 15 minutes at SF Star Trek Convention last Nov. He was gracious to me and my wife and was quite humorous. I was kind of star struck because Frank Poole was my hero since I was 13 and saw 2001 in 1968. I never thought I would meet Gary Lockwood, but 50 years later it came true.

    Dianne,
Once again, thanks for hosting your cool sites for Keir and Gary.
