I have an article of Gary from 1987 with Starlog Magazine. Here Gary talks about his start in films, the impact of starring in the second STAR TREK pilot as Lt. Cmdr. Gary Mitchell, and making 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY with Stanley Kubrick, Arthur C. Clark and his co-star Keir Dullea. You can find the transcription of the article [ here ].

Here is Gary with then wife actress Stefanie Powers in an episode of the ABC comedy LOVE AMERICAN STYLE playing Ernie in the episode Love And The Doorknob. I think I vaguely remember this episode, but not much. I’m trying to figure out what and why the doorknob is in Gary’s mouth, but alas, will never know.

I’ve added Gary’s work as Lt. Cmdr Gary Mitchell in the second pilot to the classic STAR TREK episode Where No Man Has Gone Before. Though this was the second pilot, it is listed as episode three of the first season. This episode was commissioned after series creator Gene Roddenberry failed to sell the network on his first pilot The Cage starring Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Christopher Pike. The only ones to survive the original pilot were Leonard Nimoy (Mr. Spock) and Majel Barrett (Nurse Christine Chappel) who in the original played the part of Number One. Added as The Enterprise’s new captain was William Shatner (Captain James Kirk) who it was believed would add a bit more of a Horatio Hornblower feel to the show going forward. Gary’s part was rather significant in the episode, forging the way for such characters as Ricardo Montalban’s Khan Noonien Singh.

As the title says, welcome to what I hope will be an ongoing project in chronicling the career of actor and producer Gary Lockwood. Gary starred alongside Keir Dullea, who played Commander David Bowman, in the Stanly Kubrick classic 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY as Astronaut Frank Poole. Gary also has the distinction of having starred in the second pilot of the Gene Roddenberry groundbreaking science-fiction series STAR TREK as Lt. Cmdr Gary Mitchell, the man who became a god. I’m not sure how big I hope to make this site, I just know I needed a place to put some of the images of Gary I’ve collected over the past year as I’ve built my site dedicated to his good friend Keir Dullea. For now whatever is included in the site I hope you enjoy. Thanks for stopping by and for looking us up.
